Welcome to Basil Flatrock's Garden

[Welcome to Flatrock's Garden]

Basil Flatrock EmblemWelcome

Come in, have a leisurely stroll, enjoy the sights and let me know what you think. You've entered the garden of Basil Flatrock. Within you shall see my virtual world of creations, learn about what I would like the real world to see.

Basil Flatrock has been an alias/handle of mine since the days I've dialed into a BBS. It's meaning is simply illustrated by the emblem on the right, and in the background. There's also a rendered version in the Infini-D Art gallery. as well as in the animated banner above. That is, a basil leaf lying across a flat triangular rock. Both courtesy of my mother's garden in the side yard. For those of you that visited Flatrock's Garden when it was hosted at Johns Hopkins will notice quite a few aesthetic changes. Most notably the color scheme and background, it used to be a solid black background, with neon green text, and neon orange links (I'm sure you all appreciate the change :). Those curious can download it from the files section.

About the art on this page

Starting from the top of the page:

Background
The "Flatrock Garden" background is a Adobe Photoshop 3.0 filtered version of the emblem (see Emblem below). I first greyscaled the image, applied the emboss filter and then added the tan tint. I picked light green and tan for an earth tone scheme to go along with the "Garden" theme. (1-24-97)
Animated Banner
The "Welcome to Basil Flatrock's Garden" banner was rendered in MetaCreation's Infini-D 4.5, and converted to an animated GIF with GifBuider. I modified the emblem model in the Infini-D Model Art Gallery and added text and then animated it. (9-3-98)
Emblem
The Flatrock emblem was created in Adobe Photoshop 3.0 on August 25th, 1995. While I was working in the Design Department of Fountain Technologies. Note that nothing was scanned and everything was done freehand, through filters and judicious use of layers. I'm especailly proud of the textures on the rock and the leaf. :) (5-28-95)
Spot Photo
The photo of Spot was taken with a Apple QuickTake 100 digital camera on January 13th, 1996 and edited it Adobe Photoshop 3.0 on Feburuary 24th, 1996. (The background was erased, the engraving was enhanced and an iris was added to Spot's eye. The real life Spot was carved on July 10th, 1990 when I was at Camp Sequassen teaching Arts & Crafts for the BSA. (2-24-96)
Spaace Station
"Spot's Station" was created on September 28-29th 1996 using Specular Infini-D 2.6, Adobe Photoshop 3.0.5, Adobe Premire 1.0, and MacroMedia/Paracomp SoundEdit Pro 1.0. Clicking on the Station will allow you to view a Quicktime animation of the station. [8 sec,674K]. This is my little tribute to Babylon 5 and Sophie B. Hawkins. My apologies to both. (9-29-96)
Spot Drawing
Before the advent of digital cameras, and back in the days of the Macintosh SE/30 (circa 1990). I hand drew a bitmapped version of Spot as part of my StartupScreen. When I got my Quadra 700 in 1992, I applied 'technicolor' or rather filled the spaces with color. On May 21, 1995 Spot graduated to my web pages. (5-21-95)
Galapa Gus Drawing
I made this drawing to serve as my hard drive icon. I modified a clip art piece from Deneba Canvas 5.0.3, and edited it in Adobe Photoshop 4.0. (I'm sure the Deneba people aren't too pleased with that!) (9-4-98)
Galapa Gus Picture
This model of Galapa Gus was rendered with MetaCreations Infini-D 4.5. Some editing was done in Adobe Photoshop 4.0. Clicking on Galapa Gus will open up a QuickTime VR movie [245K]. See the Infini-D Art gallery for more information about the Galapa Gus model. (9-4-98)
